Maybe that whole thing about the Mayan Calendar is true

For the first time ever, I've run more than I've swam.  Eeeks.

I'm afraid to find out what this means....

Acutally, its just because there was a storm (abeit a VERY far off storm) Friday morning, which meant that practice was cancelled.  I meant to head in later in the day, but work had other plans.  But still, nearly 2x the amount of run time.  Craziness.

August Totals

Not really training for anything, so this is really a filler post.  lolz.  Well, scratch that.  I am technically training for the Houston Marathon, but looking at my training calendar, I realized there was only one week where I ran all 3 of my weekly runs.  Most weeks I only got in 2 runs a week.  Maybe I'll do better this month....

Bike: 3h 42m 23s - 60 Mi

Run: 8h 33m 48s - 44.54 Mi
Swim: 9h 31m 13s - 24578.08 Yd
Yoga: 3h 00m

 

Analysis: bike was much lower, but that's because I've intentionally not been riding it much.  And July had a century ride.  Run was slightly higher, and that was including bailing on 2 long runs because of race conflicts, and I missed another long run for vacation.  I'll consider that a success.  Swim yardage was higher, which is interesting since I took a week vacation.  I suppose all things considered, August was a pretty decent training but not-really-training month.

Review of August Goals
  • Still going for the "take it easy and have fun" with some modifications. goal achieved!
  • Start marathon training. I signed up for Kenyan way and I have my schedule for the month. I can't follow it completely due to some race conflicts but overall it seems manageable. I think I'm on target with this goal.
  • Lazy-Hazy 5k (my last race for Team JambaJuice). I'm hesitant to put a time goal down because of the heat, but during the last 5k I walked for 30 seconds at the last water station. If I didn't walk, I would have finished in under 31 minutes. Granted, I still had a PR that day, but I'm a bit disappointed that I didn't gut it out more. Its only 3 miles. I should have sucked it up more. Goal for this race is no walking unless puking is imminent. My time was slower than the last 5k I did, but I stayed true to my goal and did not walk.  I attribute the slower time (nearly a minute) to the fact that it was WAY HOTTER.  Like I had no buisness running a 5k kind of hot. 
  • TriGirl Sprint Triathlon. This will be my first "repeat" triathlon and it will be interesting to see if I've improved. Last year I finished in 1:16. Granted, I haven't been training for sprints AT ALL. And really, I've barely touched my bike. But I would be very happy if I could beat my time from last year, just knowing that my overall fitness and mental toughness have improved since last year. Didn't beat my time, but I think that's because distances were different (swim, especially) and the bike course had more 90-degree turns.  My overall rannkings (age group and overall) were better, so this is probably a better way to evaluate improvement. 
  • Slowly break in my Newtons. Its very tempting to rush it, but I'm going to be responsible and break them in properly so I don't get injured. I'm staying on plan.  Currently up to running 3 miles in the Newtons.  I really really like them :)
September Goals
I'm actually not going to do goals this month, because so many things are up in the air.  I pretty much have the first 2 weeks of September where I know I can stay on schedule and the rest of it is chaos.  Two weeks of babysitting a boat in a refinery has a way of doing that to you.  October looks even crazier, and don't even get me started on this fall and winter. 

So I guess my goal for September is to enjoy the calm before the storm.  Because really, the next 6 months ahead of me are looking really insane (but in a way where things will all be better when we come out the other side).  How's that for vague and ominous?

Race Report - Tri Girl Sprint Triathlon

I know, I still need to do a Boise RR.  Its half written and on my desktop.  I'll post it eventually.  But this RR is super easy.

Pre-Race

Showed up at 5:45 to set up.  Was a bit different than normal, as I had a friend (M) with me and it was her first time doing a triathlon.  I wanted to make sure she got set up properly, to make things easier on her.  The RD did pre-assigned racking by number, so that made things easy.  I'm pretty sure they gave us more space than normal between numbers, as it seemed like I had quite a bit of room for my stuff.  Or maybe it felt that way because my last two races were HIM distance, with a lot more stuff.

Swim
Pretty basic - 300 meter, counter-clockwise triangle, ~60 people in my wave.  I normally like to be at the start buoy closest to the buoy line, but this time I got to the swim start a bit later than normal, and it was pretty crowded on that side.  I prefer to be in the front, so I ended up over to the far right of the start area.  This actually worked pretty well, as I decided to swim straight to the corner buoy from my starting position. This actually meant I had a ton of clear water (since everyone flocks to the buoy line) and I'm pretty sure my swim distance was a tiny bit shorter.  I hit the first turn and remarked to myself at how short this was.  ("hmmm, turn already?")  The course people were awesome and put a line of noodles together between the buoys.  This meant I never had to look up to sight, I just had to avoid the slower people from the wave in front of me and make sure I stayed a consistent distance away from the noodles.  I was in the second wave, which again, was really nice, because I only had to swim through one wave's worth of slow people.  I'm usually towards the end and get stuck dodging older men.  I swam hard to the finish, got a hand up out of the water and jogged into transition.

T1
Not much to say.  Hardly anyone in transition yet (good sign for a strong swim) but I spent time messing with stupid things.  Got to the bike mount line and dummy didn't arrange my pedals for a quick mount (I'm not coordinated enough to try for the pre-clipped shoes).  It felt like forever to clip my feet in.  Grr.

Bike
I have not spent much time on my bike in the past two months, and I've definitely not spent much time doing speed work.  The thing with sprints is that there's a very fine line between fast enough and so fast you burn your legs up for the run.  The course was an out and back though a park with some small hills and way too many 90-degree turns.  Right away I got a good rhythm going and saw 19-20 mph on my garmin.  There was some girl in my age group that blew past me on the bike, but was showing some fading or pace issues.  I noticed on some small hills that she was struggling, and I knew that I could take her on the hills thanks to my Boise training.  Not too much to say about the bike, other than it was a whole lot of passing people in the first wave, a little bit of me being passed, and me trying to go fast but not blow my legs out.  The course was a tiny bit nasty because it was mostly downhill going out and uphill coming back (we're talking maybe 100 ft elevation, though).  And all those dang turns were major speed and cadence killers.  When we came out of the park, the girl from before (who I ended up passing in the hilly section) blew past me and I was just hoping she'd blow her legs out by going too fast.  My mph was slower than going out on the flat but I didn't want to push it and not have enough for the run. I was just focusing on keeping my cadence high and my legs light for the last bit before transition.  The photographer remarked "good job Lady" to me as I came in, which was odd.  Lady.  When I told Will about this later on he said "you're no lady!" If only I had thought of that quip on the course.

T2
Shoes off and back on easy, but I was dinking around with my garmin.  I finally told myself that hello, its a race, and I can mess with the garmin while I ran.  Turns out I forgot how to operate my garmin for races... you can't reset times if the timer is still going.  Idiot.

Run
So last year, I remember that it was really hot and I walked way too much.  My goal was to negative split and not walk.  I ended up wearing my Brooks, despite the calf tightness I have when wearing them.  Sure enough, during the first 2 miles, my calves were not that happy.  Not sure if this is a function of me not doing many bricks lately or the shoes.  The first half mile of the run is icky - full sun, pavement.  But once you get into the park and the trees, its a nice winding paved/gravel trail in the trees.  I was behind my cycling nemisis and slowly gaining on her.  To my delight, she started walking at the water station and I knew I had her.  I carry my own water anymore, to avoid congestion and the temptation to walk at the water stops.  So I just kept cruisng on though at my own pace.  After the turnaround (1.5 miles) my legs loosened up a bit and I sped up.  With a mile left, I tried to go faster - kept my pace at or below 10:00/mile, with pushing hard for the last 1/3 mile.  Its really not that hard to push yourself when the run is only 3 miles (and your last race was a HIM).  Into the chute and my name was called.  Then an ice-cold towel around my neck and I was happy and done.

Nutrition
I need to tweak my bike-nutrition for sprints. I mixed my Infinit the same as normal, 2 scoops for one bike bottle (about an hour's worth). This is what I did for all my sprints last year, my training rides, and my HIMs. Well, apparently its too much for a sprint because I got some twinges of stomach cramps on the bike and two not-very-nice side-stitches on the run.  The overall effort is only around an hour (shorter than most of my workouts), so I think I'm at the point in training my glycogen levels where I don't need so much fuel during a sprint and I can go with maybe a half-strength mix and be just fine.

Stats
My goal coming into this thing was to beat last year's time (1:16).  I'm much stronger now and I thought if I could run the whole run, I was golden.  I was pretty bummed that I was a minute slower than last year.  However, the swim last year was short, and according to my friends, there weren't as many turns last year either.  When I compare my stats from 2009 to 2010, I made a marked improvement in the swim, run, both transitions, and my overall time, when compared to my own times and my placement in the age group and overall field.  My bike was slower, and I'm just chalking it up to not doing as much speed work and all the sharp turns (I was 0.5 mph slower). 

Swim: 6:13.8; 2:07/100 meter pace (several of us felt the swim was long this time)
T1: 1:42.9 (my fastest T1 ever)
Bike: 36:23.9; 18.1 mph
T2: 1:17.4 (my fastest T2 ever)

Marathon Training and Yoga

Marathon training has officially begun.  Well, mostly.  After much internal debating (and talking with friends) I decided to join Kenyan Way for marathon training.  I have my schedule through the Houston Marathon (assuming I "win" the lottery next Tuesday) and I think it wil work.  I could choose how many days a week I want to run (I chose 3), my current weekly distance and long run distance (15 miles/week, 10 mile long run), and I can also adjust my training pace to accomodate the heat and humidity.  For now until ~October, I'm basically running 5 miles on Tues, 5 miles on Thurs, and 11 miles on Saturday (21 miles per week).  Every 4th week is a recovery week, where my long runs are cut by 4 miles.  Then in October, the speed work (track sets or progressive runs) kick in, my week-day runs are between 5-7 miles long,  and my long runs gradually get longer and longer until December where I start running 20 miles.  I will have 3, 20 mile runs.  They'll be broken up, one week will be 20 miles, next week will be 12 miles, then 20, and so on.  Christmas Day will be celebrated by a 20 mile run.  Lucky me.  I suppose my "present" will be an ice bath and a nap.  Plus, I can eat whatever I want all weekend guilt-free.

Based on what my friends say, this seems like a good, solid plan.  Its nice to hear I chose wisely.  Especially when I look at my former running club's marathon training plan.  The longest run is only 15 miles - at Thanksgiving.  Two months before the marathon.  Not to mention they're missing more than a few miles.  Those poor people, it will be a tough race for them.  Glad I was smart enough to switch groups!  It may cost more and its farther away, but being properly trained is worth it!

The new running shoes are still being broken in.  Or maybe its me that's being broken in.  The Newtons are doing really well.  I've run 4 times in them, being well-behaved and only doing 1 miles per run in them.  They feel good.  Wish I could say the same for my Brooks.  My calves/achilles are so tight when I run in them, and lately my left foot goes numb after 2 miles.  Hoping this is just me being my usual "resistant to change" and hopefully running in the Brooks will get better.  I'm very tempted to race TriGirl in my Newtons this weekend, but its not worth a potenial injury from doing too much too fast in strange, form-altering shoes, so I will run in either my old NB's or run in the Brooks.

Something else I've been working on is yoga.  I've been actually more of a pilates person - have been doing pilates consistenly for ~3 years.  I really liked the core elements combined with the stretching.  But lately its boring and not very challenging.  Most likely because the Monday "Power Pilates" instructor (while very nice and technically a good instructor) is just not challenging enough for me.  I loved the old instructor - if I skipped even one week, I would be sore for days.  But I suppose the other ladies (who are not hard-core like me.. ie do "normal" amounts of exercise) didn't appreciate the harder workouts and complained.  Which is why I'm not being challenged enough.  Sure, I could take private reformer classes, but I'm not sure I want to fork over the $ for that.  I added in yoga last year, at the encouragement of some gym-friends of mine.  There's a 5:15 AM spin class and most end up going to yoga at 6 AM, which is a pretty insane, but actually good combination.  I did that last fall, then last winter I decided that waking up early on Thursdays was too much to ask of myself, so I stopped.  I resumed the spin/yoga in February, when HIM training started.  I've since dropped the spin class but have continued with the yoga.  We've had 3 yoga instructors since I started.  Andrew was insane - his class was more of a "look at the crazy things I can do", while most of us watched and laughed our own "yeah, right, I'm never going to be able to do that" laugh.  He moved, then we got a woman, who well, sucked.  But it was the only yoga class I could fit in, so I went anyways.  Some was better than nothing.  There were so many complaints about her that she was replaced by Bob.  Bob used to drive me batty, because the few times I went to one of his classes, he did breathing stuff, and he had finger chimes.  Blech.  I really didn't like his classes at first, but like I said before, it was the only class I could work into my schedule, so I needed to suck it up.  I don't know what happened, but about 2 months ago, I really started enjoying his class.  Poses were getting easier, and while he didn't do much breath work, the 2 minutes he does at the very end (while sitting - not lying down) is actually very useful.  And the breathing cues he gives us during the poses are very helpful too.  My favorite poses are half moon and anything with pidgeon.  He's also big on triangle and revolved triangle (or other revolved poses) and with my swimmer shoulders, I have pretty limited mobility in getting them rotated around and open.  But lately, he's been having to adjust me less and less.  I don't know if he's just given up on me or if I'm better.  I like to think I'm getting better.  I even got a "you're doing better" at the end of class yesterday (un-solicited!).

So now, I think I may drop pilates entirely, since Monday is now my recovery day (and the other yoga classes are even less challenging than the Monday night one) and just keep yoga.  It will be interesting to see how I can keep doing yoga at 6 AM when I also have a 7 mile run scheduled.  Maybe by that time I can run after work.  Or I will just be waking up at 4 AM to cram all this in before work.  I don't know.  But its nice to be able to see progress in something that was challenging (and frustrating at times) and then be able to translate it into other elements of my training.

July Totals

Not sure if this will much better than June.  I was a slacker in July and it was awesome.  If your definition of slacker includes doing a century ride.  Clearly, my grasp on reality is not a strong one.  Plus, I don't live and die by how many miles or mintues I've trained right now.  Its very freeing and I can honestly say I'm having a fun time.  I'm probably logging as many miles/minutes as I was at this point last summer, but compared the structure and volume of my HIM training this spring, I feel very relaxed and free.  Way cool.

So ok, slightly better than June.  Interesting.  I've been cycling sporadically (every other weekend), swimming Wed and Friday (Monday is now my rest day - I used to have Friday as my rest day but I figure with all my big IMTX weekends, Monday recovery will be manditory).  I have been consistently running.  Typically 3 miles on Tuesday and a longer run on Saturday (8-10 miles).  I'm really trying to be consistent on the running, which is hard because of the heat, but I do not want to lose my base which I worked so hard to attain.

And recently, I've noticed that I'm really liking yoga.  More than pilates.  I used to loooove pilates but the gym switched instructors ~9 months ago, and while she's ince and technically good, its just not very hard.  I'm just not getting much out of it - not seeing much improvement.  But with yoga, I'm seeing improvement.  Lately I've been getting "very good" and no posture corrections from the instructor, which is cool.  I'm really surprised by my changing tastes because I've been a big fan of pilates for years and now here I am considering dropping it from my training routine completely.

Review of July Goals
I really didn't have any goals other than "take it easy and have fun."  Mission accomplished.  I like goals like this.

New Shoes!

I recently had a friend of mine post on facebook how she was home visiting her mom and went shopping.  Strange part was that she wasn't shopping for sports related clothing or equipment.  She was shopping for "normal" stuff most women buy.

I couldn't even tell you the last time I purchased clothing that was not intended for athletic endeavours.  I'm not sure how I feel about that.  The last "non athletic" shoes I bought were a couple pairs of flats (Bare Trap - super cute and comfy!) for work, think I got them sometime in March or April.  Only purchased them because with all my running I just couldn't wear heels anymore (even a tiny heel) and I was getting stink-eye from coworkers from wearing my running shoes in the office.  So I bascially bought nice comfy shoes that may or may not resemble fancy slippers.

Last week the balls of my feet were sore.  Now, my feet are tweaky anyways, but this wasn't normal.  I thought it could be residual soreness from my century ride, but it had been nearly 10 days since the ride and my feet were still sore.  So after my 10 mile run on Saturday, I figured out I had put 271 miles on my shoes since March, which meant that I was probably close to needing a new pair.  I was a bit bummed they were done so early, which meant I likely needed to switch from my beloved New Balance 76X series to something more durable.

Changing shoes always makes me nervous.  Two foot surgeries and a broken foot make for very nervous feet.

My brick on Sunday confirmed things - I needed new shoes.  Didn't want to draw things out, so I trundled over to Luke's Locker to see what the options where.  Sarah looked at the bottom of my shoes - worn almost all the way to the base under the balls of my foot.  She had me run around barefoot to judge my gait - asked if I was purposely running fore-foot.  Nope, that's just how I run.  (or I suppose that's how I run.  barefoot through a store with people watching me.  not exactly normal conditions....)  She thought I had a bit of life left in the NB's but agreed that I needed a shoe that was more durable.  We tried on some Brooks Adrenaline GT10s.  They felt cushy under the balls of my feet, were narrow enough in the heel so my very narrow heels stayed put, and had plenty of room in the toebox.  Even though my feet are very narrow, I prefer normal width shoes and a generous toe-box.  Something about I don't like having things rubbing against my two outermost toes, which were the ones that I had surgery on.  They're fully recovered, but still, I don't like stuff on my toes.  Weird.  Then I tried on some Asics.  Eh.  Then Sarah got a gleam in her eye and whipped out the Newtons.  Asked me if I was game.  I told her that I was intrigued but never had the courage to try some one.  I tried on the Modus ones, which are the stability model.  Very funky.  But intriguing.  I'm all about ugly/crazy/shiny so of course I had to get them.  And I decided to get the Brooks as well, for a "daily runner". 

I can't wait to try them both out.  I will have to be patient with the Newtons - they recommend only running 1 mile (just one!) for the first few weeks, and then you can build your distance by 10 minutes.  My coworker ran 3 miles in his Newtons on his first time out and he's been limping around with a strained calf for 10 days.  But he's a boy and a bit on the crazy side, so I think I will be wiser and smarter.  Still, only running a mile is weird.  I guess I will run 2-3 miles tomorrow in my Brooks then swing by the house and do a quick transition into the Newtons for a mile.  I hope that since I was already running forefoot (based on the wear pattern on my NBs) that the transition should go ok.  We shall see.

Its weird - I'm actually EXCITED to run.  Never in a million years would I have thought I'd be excited to run.  Very cool stuff.

Odds and Ends

Don't feel very focused lately, so here's just a lot of random...

Swift-kitty is not doing so awesome lately, which sucks.  She's 15, which is old, but she's kinda supposed to live forever, right?  Around January, her she got really skinny and her fur was greasy looking, so I took her to a new vet.  She was diagnosed with high blood pressure - so now we get to give her 1/4 of a very crumbly pill daily.  Before Boise, I didn't want to saddle our house-sitter with force-feeding a crumbly pill to our cat (who actually takes pills well), so I got tuna flavored custom compounded medicine treats.  Well, I think Swift decided that she liked the medicine treats a bit too much, and she went on a hunger strike.  In her 15 years, she's never been picky.  And now she is.  My daily life is governed by my cat's eating habits.  She'll like something for a while, long enough for me to decide its safe to buy a bunch of that variety, only to have her flat out snub it completely right after I buy 10 cans.  I'm now afraid to buy lots of any kind of kitty food, so I'm running to the store 2x a week for food.  2 weeks ago, she still wasn't eating much and even Will got concerned, so we took her back to the vet.  Bloodwork showed that she likely has either one or a combination of IBS, lymphoma, or pancreatitis.  Only way to tell for sure is surgical biopsy.  And there's no cure, only treatment, which involves chemo.  None of which are super fun for a 15 year old cat.  Sucky.  Fortunately (?) my vet's own cat is having the same health issues, so she's well versed on how to handle this.  We're trying weekly B-12 shots for 6 weeks and see if that doesn't help perk her up.  And we're trying to feed her 2-3 times a day to try and get her weight up.  She's actually eating ok-ish but she's not that perky.  Normally Swift is glued to me 24-7.  She's my nap buddy, tv watching buddy, sleep buddy.  Now she just hangs out on the cat stand on the other side of the room.  Barely even cuddles with me.  Its almost like she's trying to prepare me.  Not cool.  She's my nap buddy and I need her for all my recovery naps for IMTX training.  Ugh.  So yeah, daily happiness is directly related to if Swift will eat nasty-smelling fish cat food, while my other kitty is very unhappy to be locked in the spare bathroom, away from the food he so very much wants to eat.

Will's job is not awesome.  Will is mostly not that awesome, but I can't fix it.  He's stressed and working too much, not really having time or desire to do much else.  He may have a way out soon..... I hope so for his sake and mine.  Boo.

I really try not to blog too much about work, but this is probably safe.  For the past year, I basically have been officed in a cubicle area that I refer to as "siberia".  (I purposely wanted to be in siberia, so this is a good thing).  The other cubicles were empty, it was quiet, and I was happy.  Our office is growing and now siberia is populated with loud people.  Including a whistler.  Today I had enough of the whistling (as did my friend), so it was up to me to put an end of it.  Slightly comical, as he'd whistle and I'd stand up to figure out who the hell was doing it, only to have him stop.  This went on for ~10 minutes until I just said screw it and made a broadcast announcement asking for the whistling to end.  I then sat back down and the whistling started back up.  Turns out this guy had headphones on and didn't hear me.  He had no idea he was whistling or that it was becoming very disruptive.  He's been quiet for the rest of the day - we'll see if this sticks.

I'm the activities coordinator for the office, and since work is a bit slow, I've got time to do some fun things.  My main "fun" project is a food collection drive, where I've split the office into 6 teams and we compete against eachother for the longest linear distance of food donated.  The winning team will get a prize (no idea what the prize is yet, probably a lunch or something).  Contest is for a month and we'll be doing weekly updates to keep the buzz going.  I'm very curious to see what sort of turn out we get.

I was told yesterday by our office manager that our "fun" budget has drastically increased, which means I have 6 months to spend $$ for morale and fun things.  We have problems getting volunteers to coordinate "events", so I'm mainly going the gift certificate route.  GCs to a nice chain of restaurants (Pappas), smaller $ GCs to Starbucks, company logo swag (bags, leatherman, etc).  This will be given away at meetings or random drawings.  The trick is to find something easy to do (since we're all busy) that reaches people regardless of how often they are in the office or attend meetings.  Random name drawings isn't very creative, but its easy.  I think we're also going to do monthly breakfasts, but make each business group be responsible for a month (we'll pay but they have to buy and organize).  Anyone have any other ideas that are easy to implement?

My "non-training" is going well.  I'm swimming 2x a week, running 2-3 x a week, doing yoga once a week, fitting in pilates occasionally, and randomly riding my bike.  Its nice to not have a set schedule or feel like I HAVE to get my training time in.  I'm doing the Lazy-Hazy-Crazy 5k on Aug 7th for Team Jamba Juice and TriGirl sprint August 15th - neither of which require very much training.  Actually, TriGirl might hurt, but that's fine.  I can handle 75 minutes of hurt.  Especially since most of my workouts are at least that long. 

I have my very first purple toenail.  Got it from the century ride 2 weeks ago, which is actually pretty strange.  I'm actually surprised that this is the first toenail issue I've had.  Purple toenails are *awesome*.

Oh, and I chopped 7 inches of my hair off - its now to my jawline.  I now have earrings longer than my hair.  That's a bit strange.  Still trying to figure out if I like it and what to do with it.  Still having issues using way too much styling product.  General concensus is that its cute and looks good.  I don't recognize myself and occasionally I get flashes of my mom in the mirror.  I will say, however, that its awesome to have "intentionally messy" hair.  Honestly, the messier it is, the better it seems to look.  That's pretty cool.

Katy Flatlands Century Ride

Yesterday was my first ever century ride.  This became a goal of mine last year, where I rode the 55 mile distance at Flatlands.  This distance, at the time was my longest to date - I think I had one or two 40 mile rides before I did this one.  The ride was hot, but manageable, and I made it a goal to ride the 100 mile route in 2010.

This year I've ridden 50+ miles several times this year for HIM training.  My longest ride was in May, a 63 mile ride in Chappell Hill (4 hrs).  I've been taking a break after Boise, only riding my bike twice in the past 2 weeks.  The first ride was supposed to be a 60 mile in Chappell Hill, but ended early with 2 flat tires by mile 18.  The second ride was a 50 mile ride during a club training ride.  I was able to hold a good mph on that ride and wasn't sore, so I decided that doing the 100 route at KfC was possible and not a terrible idea.  Besides, I need to do several more century rides for IMTX, so better to start early.

Nutrition
I have to carry 100% of my nutrition with me, so this was a great time to practice for IMTX.  I have a 28 oz profile aero bottle, a 40 oz speedfill, and a cage for a regular bike bottle - enough for 4 hrs regular strength Infinit.  For this ride, I decided to mix the aero and speedfill at regular strength (3 hrs) and to concentrate 4 hrs worth on Infinit into a standard bike bottle.  The concentrated mix was fairly thick but it was still fluid enough to pour into the speedfill at water stations.  After I drank the aero bottle, I kept that as "water only" (sometimes I just want plain water after a few hours).   The aero bottle also served as a container to refill with water to dump into the speedfill, since it wasn't practical to haul my bike over to the water station to fill the bottle attached to my frame.  I labeled the concentrated bottle into quarters and dumped half the bottle into my speedfill (roughly a 2 hr mix) at the appropriately times rest stations.  I topped it off with fresh water and assumed it would mix.  I assumed wrong - the first hour was pretty concentrated.  I needed to do a better job mixing things as the concentrated mix just sank to the bottom.  The result was that it was VERY strong and I didn't want to drink it.  I forced myself though, because I knew I'd need the calories.  At the second fill-up I did a better job mixing by blowing bubbles through the straw to mix it from the bottom up.

I supplemented my Infinit with Hammer Gels.  I like Hammer for 2 reasons:  they're a Montana company and I love to support Montana and they have the smallest amt of straight sugar in their gels.  I'm sugar sensitive, so its nice knowing there are gels which won't send my blood sugar zooming.  I brought 5 gels and had 3.  One at hour 1, 2, and 4.  Towards the end of the ride I just wasn't feeling the gels.  I had good energy so I went by instincts and it worked out ok.

I was also a bit hungry at the 3 hr mark so I tried to eat a cookie.  Not a good idea - too sweet and the texture was all wrong.  I had a orange slice at subsequent rest stops which worked much better.

The Plan
There were a total of 8 rest stops for the century ride - distance between stops was between 8 - 14 miles.  I didn't want to be in "race mode" with minimal stops, but I didn't think it was necessary to stop at every rest stop.  The plan was to stop at #s 2, 4, 6, and 8.
The Ride
Even though I showed up earlier than last year, I understimated the time to get ready.  Packet pickup, bathroom stop, drink mix, airing tires, etc.  They didn't have announcements down in the parking area, and I knew that the ride started at 7 but couldn't hear if they were on time.  I looked at my watch and saw 7:05, so I rushed off, hoping to catch the tail end of the 100 mile group and that I didn't forget anything crutial.  Fortunately, there were quite a few on the century group waiting to ride and we all left within a few minutes of me arriving at the start.

The nice high clouds that were there on my drive over to the ride start  rapidly vanished when the sun came up.  This ride is typically hot, so its not like I didn't know better.

The first 21 miles was along the route I'd ridden the week before.  Good pavement and flat.  I hit RS#1 and was feeling fine and I wanted to try and catch up with the main group, so I stayed on-plan and went on through.  I stopped at RS#2 for a quick bathroom break and to fill my aero bottle with straight water.  On the way to RS#3 I picked up a couple of guys.  There was a long slight incline with a mild headwind, and they decided to pace off of me (aka let me do the work as they draft off of me).  We hit RS#3 and I convinced them to keep moving since the next RS was only 13 miles away.  I left the guys behind me, but somewhere around mile 40 they passed me in this huge pace line.  I've never ridden a pace line before but I decided to try and tag on to the tail of it and see what it was like.  I LOVE pacelines!  I had to be careful since I was riding aero but I could easily maintain 19 mph.  It was so much fun!  Then the road we were on (Hwy 39?)  got very crappy.  It was cobble chip-seal and most of the cobbles were missing.  I ended up riding right on the white line (the paint was the smoothest part of the shoulder) and even though there was plenty of room for cars, several trucks were total assholes, blowing by us close to the shoulder honking the whole time.  Lovely.  As we turned off of 39, a BNSF train was blowing across the intersection so we had to stop for ~5 minutes and wait for it to pass.  From there, we were pretty congested all the way to RS#4.

I felt really good at RS#4 (mile 49), except for the heat.  I was ok temperature-wise riding but when I stopped I just got really hot.  All my regular strength Infinit was gone so I refilled my speedfill with the concentrate, tried to eat a cookie (not a good idea), and hit the bathroom.  I was still keeping to my plan of skipping every other RS, so I skipped #5 (mile 62).  Once I got to mile 65, things got ugly.  I got really hot, my heart rate was 160+, I was pretty much riding by myself, and all my contact points (saddle, elbows, feet) were hurting.  I'd have to fidget every few miles, which made it a long 10 mile ride to RS#6.  Once I got there, I decided to take a long-ish break.  I got cold water, sat by the fan, dumped ice down my jersey, got fresh water for my bike.  At that rest stop, I met up with one of the guys I'd friended around RS#4.  He lost his buddy, so we decided to ride together to the next rest stop.  It was just too hot to stick to the every-other-RS plan.  So off we went.  For the first ~5 miles I zoomed off ahead, but just a I did on the previous leg, I got uncomfortable and fidgety.  The only nice thing is that the clouds were building and looked like we could get rain.  Stopped at RS#7. More resting, oranges, water, ice, hoping for rain.  We had 20 miles left but decided to stop at the next rest stop anyways.  Mentally, I couldn't process 20 miles but I could handle 12 and 8 mile segments.  About 5 minutes into our ride, the sky broke and we got ~10 minutes of torrential downpours.  Now that it wasn't hot, my HR went under 150 and I could cruise.  Plus, I was so busy focusing on the rain that the other things that were bothering me got ignored.  Twelve miles went by fairly fast and we were at the final rest stop.  Normally I would have felt ridiculous stopping with 8 miles left, but by that point I was just happy for the mental break.  I messaged Will to let him know I was alive, got some more water, and we were off.  The rain was pretty bad for this leg - nearly consistent downpour for all 8 miles.  There were times where you'd hear someone go "is it hailing? nope" because the rain hurt that bad.  It sucked, but it was still less sucky than riding in the heat.  We finally got back to the stadium and I was done.  101.2 miles on the Garmin.  I did bring my running shoes but with the rain, it was pretty ridiculous.  I have 10 months to practice long bricks.  No need to start today.

Closing thoughts
It became very obvious I need to spend a lot of time in the saddle.  Leg strength/endurance was good, nutrition was good.  But those dang contact points hurt so much.  No other way around it but time in the saddle.  Not sure what to do about the heat other than just continue to watch my HR and not push too hard when its hot.

I have my work cut out for me for IMTX.  Yowzers.

Try not to have to walk up any hills on the bike portion of the race I still have to finish my race report, but there really was only one monster hill.  Fortunately we had a tailwind for that so I made it up just fine.  The race directors were strange and decided to put aid station #2 IN THE MIDDLE OF AN UPHILL CLIMB.  I was with Jeff and we both had to get water and knew we had to physically stop due to the hill.  Fine.  But me being stubborn and my "no walking up hills" goal decided that I was going to clip in and ride up this hill.  Even though almost everyone else was walking.  So, I clipped one foot in and of course, couldn't turn my foot over in time to get clipped in and moving, so I did the super awesome slow motion side crash, in front of everyone at the water station.  And somehow I managed to cut my leg so I was bleeding.  So, I just walked up the hill, being slightly mortified.  But I'm not counting this one against me.  Jeff was very happy to report to the entire family in T2 that "Erin is bleeding and its awesome."  Lovely.

Game. On.

I just registered for Ironman Texas.  140.6 miles, May 21, 2011, The Woodlands, TX.

Yes it will be very hot and humid.  Yes I will most likely be walking a good chunk of the marathon.  Yes, I will probably finish in 15+ hours.  Yes, I'm freaking out, thinking this is a terrible idea, but still really excited to see how this terrible idea plays out.

Hopefully I won't die.  I've got ~330 days to get ready.

On Vacation


I will post a race report later in the week - maybe next week.  I will say it was one of the hardest things I've done.  Swim was perfect (at least my time was exactly what I was shooting for).  I ran the entire run except for a bit before mile 11 and a bit before mile 12.  And I survived the bike.  Made it up the big scary hill and I didn't die.  Considerable achievement, given we had 28 mph winds and 35 mph gusts.  Including a headwind the entire 20 "easy downhill coast" to the bike finish.  Given how hard the bike was I'm super proud that I ran the run section so well.  It may not have been fast or pretty, but my feet were moving in a motion generally resembling running.

Today, everything but maybe my ears are sore.  We're headed out the grandparents ranch for a few days and then up to the mountains for hiking, kneeboarding, and fly fishing.  I think I earned this R&R.

Procrastination

So, its Tuesday and we fly to Boise tomorrow.  This is my first time flying to a race and I know that I've got tons of stuff to pack and organize.  Take down my bike, pack it in the loaner hard case, pack my nutrition, pack my race stuff, pack 10 days worth of clothes.

Have I done any of this?

no.

Its not for lack of time.  Saturday I was done and home from running by 8:30.  Went and had breakfast with the swim team, was done by 11.  Decided to go and swap out cell phones (work is cancelling the company phone service and has asked everyone to migrate their number to a personal account and then we have to expense our bill every month - fun!).  Then I took a nap.  Sunday I got up early, did a brick (a very pathetic brick - my leg is unhappy again).  Then home for a nap and Super Mario Galaxy 2.  All afternoon and part of the evening.  Last night was better spent watching some people go for the Guinness Book of Records entry in the largest rice krispy treat. And all weekend long I've been obsessively checking message boards for reports of water temperatures and predicted winds for race day.

I should have been spending my time looking over my wetsuit, making sure there were no tears, getting all my race stuff in order and even packed.  Should have spent time figuring out how to take my bike apart and practice it.

I think the reason I didn't do any of this is that maybe I don't want Boise to happen quite yet.  Don't get me wrong, I'm physically and mentally prepared.  I've been training hard.  But I think the deal is that once I pack, then that makes the race real.  And quickly approaching.  Almost like its been so fun training and talking about it, but I'm not really convinced that the race itself will be fun.  Honestly, I'm most scared of the bike.  They changed the course and its a bit easier (no more short spikey hills on the profile, now there's just ~5 hills, one of which is steep but the rest seem ok).  And I'm afraid of the things I can't control (wind, hills).  So, if I don't pack, that means the race isn't here, and I don't have to worry quite so much.  Something like that.  There's just something about packing that makes things tangible and real.

But like it or not, the race is here and tonight I have to pack.  Everything.  I just hope I don't forget anything.

Taper - what's that?

Where is this mythical taper that everyone speaks of?  From where I'm at, I just don't see it.  Here's my schedule for this week and next:
  • 5/29 - 14 mile run
  • 5/30 - 60 mile hilly ride
  • 5/31 - masters swim
  • 6/1 - 8 mile run, which I refused to do.  "compromise" was the track workout, which was 1x1600 warm up, 3 x 4800 (that's 3 miles) z3-4.  After the first 4800, I cut the second one to 3200.  Still, that was a lot.
  • 6/2 - masters swim AM, 2 hr bike PM (I cut the bike to 1:45 because hello? I ran out of daylight)
  • 6/3 - 45 min spin / 60 min yoga in the morning
  • 6/4 rest
  • 6/5 - 8 mile run (part of it is a 5k race)
  • 6/6 - 90 min bike, 60 min run (brick)
  • 6/7 - 90 min masters swim , 60 min pilates
  • 6/8 - pre-race brick (BIKE - WU 10 min Z2 then 3x5min (3min Z4, 2min Z2)  RUN - WU 5 min Z2 then 3x5min (3min Z4, 2min Z2), 5 min cool down)
  • 6/9 - fly to boise
  • 6/10 - 25 min run
  • 6/11 - same brick as 6/8 plus a 20 min swim
  • 6/12 - race day

 Is it me, or does this week seem really heavy? I tried asking my coach, but he took that as me questioning him, when really, this seems heavy compared to most people's tapers.  Of course, I'm most of the way through this week, so its a moot point.  I just hope that this week hasn't done more harm than good.

Recover from the HIM. I'm climbing the walls, but I've been told by many people to "respect the recovery". So I will do my best. Still, its frustrating. I think I did this... 

Theme word for Team Erin is "Chappell Hill". Lots of riding hills to get ready for Boise.  Got in 2 training rides in Chappell Hill.  This was the best I could manage, with recovery and a race in Corpus Christi.

Get acclimated to the heat. Easier said than done, but well, its getting hot out so I don't have much of a choice here.  I guess I did this?  Meaning, I excercised in the heat and didn't die.

No injuries. And do not let the training schedule kill me. Easier said than done. I guess I did this as well? Meaning, I excercised a lot and didn't die. However, I will say that I felt like crap last week with sinus issues (allergies/over-training/sick), so I took it easy last week.  Still, I didn't die.

T-Minus 2 weeks to Boise

I think last week's stress was a bad bad thing..... My head started feeling funky (sinus issues) Tuesday afternoon and I'm still feeling a bit out of it.  Not full blown terrible, just a little off.  Could be allergies, fatigue, or that word which I will not type.  So, I scratched my workouts Tues and Wed and my run on Thurs night.  I have 14 miles running on my schedule for tomorrow, so here's hoping I can get that done.  I typically feel fine in the morning and get worse as the day moves on, so its sounding like this is a allergy/fatigue thing.  (even though I've been resting and taking allergy pills and still feel about  the same as I did on Tues...)

I'm getting things wrapped up for Boise.  My second pair of DeSoto tri shorts had an inseam blow-out (my first pair had both inseams unravel after 30 min of cycling - not cool!  They were nice and sent a replacement pair, but I'm having the same issue - after 6 rides.).  I'm done with DeSoto and got 2 pairs of shorts at Tri on the Run to test out.  One Zoot and one Louis Garneau.  The sales girl owns both of the pairs that I got and loves them, so here's hoping....  At least I have a weekend to test them out properly!

My coach changed up my weekend plan (I guess he didn't realize my race was in 2 weeks?  I dunno...).  I was supposed to so a 1 hr run on Saturday and a 2 hr ride / 80 min run Sunday.  This has been changed to a 14 mile run Saturday and a 60 mile ride on Sunday.  I'm actually ok with this, since I haven't run or ridden this distance since LoneStar, 5 weeks ago.  Headed back to Chappell Hill for the ride, which I'm hoping will give me confidence.

I was recently accepted to be part of Team Jamba Juice, as part of http://www.activeambassadors.com/.  I'm SUPER excited, as this is my first "sponsorship".  I get a logo'd set of shirt/shorts/visor and need to wear them out at 3 local races between now and September.  I love Jamba Juice, so this is a good fit.  I should be getting JJ gift cards with my sponsor package, so if you want some, just holler!  Warning, though, as I may make you meet me out during a training run or something for you to "earn" your card.    They're working a 5k next weekend and asked me to race.  I'll be in my taper, so I'm not sure if I'm able (still waiting to hear back from my coach), but I think a 5k should be fine.

And in other news, my father-in-law ended up having his open heart surgery yesterday.  Planned for a valve replacement and single bypass.  Ended up doing the valve replament and 4 bypasses (eeps).  He came out of surgery and is off the ventilator, so that's good news.

Hard training weekend

I figure I have maybe 1 more "hard" weekend before I taper for Boise.  I'm soooooo ready to taper its not even funny.

Thursday
Only sort of technically the weekend, but it contributes to "the crazy" so I want to include it here.  Just like every Thursday, I went to my 5:15 AM spin class (cadence 100 class) and then my 6 AM yoga class (this combo is actually pretty challenging).  Normally it takes me about 5 min to get my cadence up to 100 rpm for this class (we do it about once a month) but thanks to the previous night's 3 x 10 min zone for repeats, my legs were primed for speed.  I hit 100 rpm on our first count and easily maintained the speed throughout.  Yoga was super nice - we had a sub that I'd always heard about but never had the chance to take a class from.  She was SUPER awesome and I left feeling great and ready for the day.

Thurs night was a 70 min tempo run (24.5 min zone 2, 21 min zone 3, 24.5 zone 4, then a 10 min walk to cool down).  It was hot out (90 degrees, maybe?) and I really didn't think I would be able to run AND descend this thing.  To my surpise I did and logged nearly 7 miles.

Friday
I was becoming increasingly crabby and tired, plus I have 170 vacation hours in the bank (sooo many things wrong with that right there).  Work isn't super busy so I opted to take the day off.  Got a 90 min massage (which hurt but was awesome... dang knots and trigger points).  Then I took a short nap, worked for a bit, ran some errands.

Saturday
Got up at 5:30, hit the trail at 6:30 for a 12 mile zone 2 run.  I really should have hit it 15 min earlier.  Even though I swim outside, I can't manage to remember what time the sun comes up.  Running was REALLY slow today, compared to previous long pace runs.  Not sure if this was due to being tired, sore from the massage, the heat, or all three.  Managed to tough it out for 8.5 miles and then I had to start walking.  I didn't walk too much (0.2 miles at most) and pushed the last mile.  Still, not a stellar performance.  Got home, took an ice bath, tried (and failed) to take a nap before my bike.

Coach wanted me to ride 3 hrs that afternoon, about 3-5 hours after my run.  I had it in my head I needed to do hills on Saturday AND Sunday, so once I got the motivation to pack up my bike stuff, I started to head out to Chappell Hill for a 40 mile hill ride.  Traffic was horrible and little nagging voices in my head were getting louder, so I decided to scrap the Hill and head back to the park for my ride.  Probably a good decision - especially since I'd never ridden there before and I was by myself.  And it was mid-afternoon and 90+ degrees out.  So I did my usual out-and-back bike ride at George Bush park.  Out felt fine, back was increasingly slower speed-wise.  I was thinking about doing a second loop to get my miles in, but things were degrading pretty quickly, so I decided to stop an hour early.  Manged to get in 30 miles, and considering the heat AND my 12 mile run that morning, I felt like I still accomplished something.  Went home, put on my recovery socks/tights, and vegged for the night.

Sunday
Slept in until 5:45 today and hit the road at 6:05 for Chappell Hill.  Some people from my tri team are doing the Buffalo Springs 70.3 at the end of June and need hill work, so we organized our own little brick, meeting at 7:30.  I was scheduled for a 3 hr ride and 1 hr run.  I wanted to start at 7 in hopes of it not being ridiculously hot for the run, but apparently my teammates are not the earlybird that I am.  I got out there at 7:10 and got everything set up.  They rolled in at 7:30 and futzed around... didn't get started until 8 AM.  Ugh. 

We didn't even leave the town square before Jason had issue #1.  He's a fast rider, and he said it wasn't a big deal, so I kept going, knowing he'd catch up with us.  So I just kept cruising along, assuming Melissa was behind me.  At mile 7, I hit the turn, looked behind me, and no one was there..... Hmmm....  Given our late start, I really didn't want to hang out and wait so I just kept going.  Besides, I was positive they would catch me.  I headed north on our 45 mile route and the scenery was just so pretty.  Especially along William Penn road - small road with big trees, rolling hills, and green pastures.  So pretty.  I did stop around mile 15 to do a map check and to stretch (my stupid right leg is still bugging me).   I was doing ok with the hills, but I think I need to take my bike in, as it was having a hard time shifting between the small and big ring up front.  This could be because its been 2 months since I've done hills and just haven't done much rapid shifting or it could be something else.  Either way, it was annoying and I need it looked at before I get to Boise.  TX105 had bigger hills, but I was doing a good job managing the down-hills so I could stay in the big ring for most of the up-hills.  The turn south finally arrived, which meant headwind.  For 20 miles...  Boo.  Around mile 30 I stopped again to stretch my leg, and still no sign of my 2 teammates.  Weird.  This southern portion was not quite as pretty and defnitely more sunny.  And I don't know if I was just tired, out of hill shape, dealing with headwind, or what, but the last 15 miles were quite a bit slower.  The final 5 miles were ridiculously slow.  The uphills were just pathetic - easiest or 2nd toeasies gear on the small ring and I'm still fighting to get up the hill.  This makes me nervous for Boise as well, since these hill were half the size.  But I'm hoping that the hardship is just due to be being tired from all my training.... Too late to do much about it now, so we'll just have to see.  Hopefully my race report won't detail how I had to dismount and walk up the hill :/

I finally make it back to my truck (3 hrs on the nose) and get ready for me 1 hr run.  I really didn't want to run any hills so I ended up doing a loop around town that was about 0.8 miles long.  It was now after 11 AM and the sun was so bright and so hot with not much shade.  So, my run was more like a half run / half walk.  My HR never got too high but I was just so hot and tired that it was hard to make myself run.  So I didn't.  I probably should have, but oh well.  With each loop past the parking area, still no sign of my teammates.  And when I was done, they still weren't back.  Really, 1 hour behind me?  Not a good sign.  I decided to head over to the gas station to change shirts and get some cold water, and if they weren't back yet, I was going to drive around and try to find them.  Fortunately when I got back from the gas station, Jason was back, so that was a relief.  Turns out they had issues with their rear water-bottle cages turning into bottle launchers and then Melissa crashed.  We waited for Melissa to come back, chatted for a while, and then I headed home. 

me trying to look dead from my 4 hrs in the heat.  camera on the phone sucks, you can't even see the beads of sweat on my arms or the dead bugs who drowned and stuck in on my sunscreened arms.
Went home, ate a late lunch, showered, then had a call with Will's dad/family.  By that time it was 5 PM, so no nap for me.  Just crammed myself back in my recovery tights and went to the store, looking like a hot mess.
 
Swim practice this morning (Monday) was pretty rough.  My legs aren't sore, but apparently they're very tired.  Even simple 125 IMs were very tiring.  Not sure what this weekend holds (plan isn't loaded yet) but I do think I need to get in at least 1 more Chappell Hill ride.  If anything, I need the confidence boost.  Then its taper time.  Woo!

I knew May would be hard, but not quite like this

I'm smack in the middle of my hardest training month ever.  I logged 16 hours last week.... I've logged 7.5 hrs this week and have 11 hrs this weekend (run 17 miles and ride ~100 miles).  Work is slow-ish.  Really, its just that things are boring and I'm growing weary of my less-than-cooperative client, but I don't really have other projects on the horizon, so I'm stuck on this one.  Normally I'm ok dealing with this project, but when I'm tired and not all that busy, it becomes very hard to stay motivated.

So I was expecting my workouts to be hard.  Work is usually crazy (I actually prefer crazy to boring).  But then there's lots of "life" things that are just piling onto my already tired psyche.  Last Monday, authorities found the body of my friend's twin sister (likely murdered her husband).  She was missing for over a week with forensic evidence leading to foul-play, but for some reason reading the news reports of her injuries really got to me.  I really can't even process what my friend is going through, or her sister's kids.  Its just horrible.  Then Will's dad has a new medical drama that not going to get better anytime soon.  He's likely in congestive heart failure, the result of years of not taking responsibility for his health.  He went into the ER 2 weeks ago with fluid build up in his leg and had emergency angioplasty.  He's out now, but after a visit to a cardiologist, he needs another angioplasty and valve replacement surgery.  Surgery is scheduled for May 27, with 7-10 days in the hospital and 6 weeks of recovery (overlapping with my HIM in Boise).  This is further complicated by distance (we're in TX, he's in ID, Will's sister is in NOLA).  And my FIL doesn't have any of his documents current.  So, we're trying to get his will updated (it lists their mom as executor - they got divorced 15 years ago).  And we need to get a power of attorney (medical and financial) set up.  And DNR documents set up.  Preferably before the surgery.  Next Thursday.  And as Will said yesterday, "Its really hard to talk to your dad about where he wants to be buried."  Wow.

I'm just so blah I ended taking a vacation day today.  Got a 90 minute massage (which was awesome), tried to take a nap, got in some tv and kitty time.  Need to research PoA stuff, but really don't feel like it.  Need to figure out where tomorrow afternoon's bike ride will be, but again, just not feeling it.

I knew surviving May would be hard, but wow, I sure wasn't expecting these curveballs.  Thank goodness there's only 1 more week to the month!  I'm not sure I can handle much more. :/

Beach to Bay Marathon Relay Race Report

My co-worker (A, from Team Erin) has done this race several times and managed to pull together several of us from work to form a team.  The premise is that you do a marathon as a 6-person relay in Corpus Christi.  Each leg is 4-5 miles, starting from the beach and ending at the bay.  We decided to make a weekend of it and rent a condo on the beach.  Sharing a condo with coworkers is a whole other level of weirdness (I really try to limit being too social with my direct coworkers, due to being stabbed pretty bad by some coworker "friends" a few jobs ago.  Sharing a 3 bedroom condo was out of my comfort zone, but my fiscal cheapness won out).  To make things complicated for me personally, this race is 4 weeks before my Boise 70.3, which is pretty bad timing to be taking 3-day weekend trip AND doing a race.  Not to mention trying to get my 70.3 training in.

Friday
I had to get a bike ride in, so I got up early Friday morning and rode 35 miles.  My Garmin died (wouldn't charge, turn on, connect - nothing), so I was a bit panicky!  Fortunately, the unit came back to life after a soft reset (unlike the last time it died and I had to send it back in).  Then I had a whopping 1 hr to shower and pack before A picked me up.  We ended up having lunch by my house (with me decked out in my compression recovery tights), then loaded up everything (running and cycling gear) and hit the road.  The weather was crappy (rain) but we made decent time - got to the packet pick up at 5:15 PM.  I had never heard of B2B before and was very surpised to hear that there were 12,000 people running.  That's 2,000 people PER leg.  Craziness.  Pick-up was fairly disorganized (and crowded!) but we got it done.  Headed down to the island to our condo, unpacked, and waited for the rest of the team to show up.  We got tired of waiting, so we headed over to the restaurant for dinner, which was so crowded it was unreal.  Ended up being seated at 9 PM.  WAY to late of a dinner for me.  Had tuna w/potatoes, then it was back to the condo.  The last couple showed up and we were all wound up and ended up staying up much later than I prefer (11:30) chatting.

Saturday (pre-race)
Our condo was 1 block from the beach, and the race had a beach start that according to some people's phones was 0.5 miles away from our condo.  Leg #1 was a beach out and back run and  I was doing Leg #2, which started on the beach and went to the Causeway Bridge.  I got up at 6 AM, tried to make coffee but couldn't figure out where A stashed it.  Runner #1 was up and getting ready, and we both wished we had taken the time the night before to scout out the race start, as we had no idea about where it was specifically.  Race started at 7 AM, so #1 left around 6:30.  I left at ~6:40 and quickly realized that the race start was not as close as we thought.  I jogged 1 mile before getting to the beach access (#4) and I had to walk down the beach ~3/4 of a mile to the pier which was where the race started.  I had never done a relay, so I didn't know what to expect, but this was crazy.  I was expecting to see a sign or an inflatible or "something" indicating the hand-off location.  Instead I round 2,000 Leg #2 runners crowded in a narrow part of the beach (it was high tide and there wasn't much room).  They crammed us into the area which also contained the water station AND the first aid tent.  And then you add the stress of trying to hear your team number being called over the speaker (poor announcer guy sounded like an auctioneer) and trying to see your relay person before he went past you.  Not to mention pre-race jitters and a boat-load of volunteers yelling at the #2 people to move back to give the runners room in the chute.  Argh!

Race
When we were putting our relay together, we had to predict our run time, so that the next person knew about what time to expect the baton.  I said I would "try" for 50 min (10:42 pace for 4.67 miles).  Wasn't too sure how that would go, given all my training for the week, but it was a nice round number so I went with it.

The first runners showed up 20 min after the gun.  Then the nervous waiting started.  I didn't hear my team number get called, but fortunately, my #1 is TALL, so I spotted him right away.  It also helped that I had a neon green tank top with a gun-toting panda bear on the front.  He passed the baton off and did not look happy at all.  Hmmm...  It was very congested and I was still on sand, but I tried to get moving.  It was also very warm and humid, which aren't optimal for running.  After ~500 yards I found pavement and started to make my way northward, holding around an 11:00 pace, passing some and getting passed by others.  I was crusing along and then around mile 1 I noticed very dark ominous clouds, and even said aloud "that looks BAD".  Then just like that I ran into what felt like a wall of cold wind, which was a very strange feeling.  It literally was like walking into a walk-in cooler with strong headwind.  At first I was a bit freaked but once I realized that this meant COLD air temperatures I was probably the happiest runner out there.  I love cold!  This meant I could push things faster w/out blowing my HR up.  Sweet!

I estimate that the winds were ~20+ mph with some pretty intense gusts.  And then it started raining.... small drops at first and then rain so heavy it felt like hail.  I was wearing my Texas 70.3 hat and didn't want to lose it, so I ran with my head down to keep my hat from blowing away.  That made the view for nearly the whole race consist of my shoes and the pavement directly in front of my shoes.  Awesome.  Water stops were amusing, as the paper cups were blowing every which way and the poor volunteers (which I thanked loudly) were drenched.  I was drenched.  But I wasn't hot and was so stinking happy to be running in windy torrential downpours in cool air temperatures.  As I was running and pushing faster, I just kept thinking to myself "I can do this - this is good training for Boise - I am a triathlete and a little wind/rain is no problem".  With the last 1.7 miles to go, I sped up and started passing people who had passed me.  I felt strong.  The last 0.7 mile, I'm pretty sure I was close to a 9 minute split (+/- 15 seconds).  This was where I realized I could "trust my training".  All those track workouts with sprint intervals and the recent hour long decend pace runs were paying off.  I was running as fast as I could and not dying.  Hooray!  I looked up and saw the bridge, and knew my #3 runner was just beneath it.  I had to run faster, and I did.  I glanced at my Garmin and it showed 8:30/mile as my pace.  I felt pukey, indicating I was right on target for finishing strong.  As I came into the chute to hand off my baton, I found #3 easily and wished him luck.  Poor guy had to run OVER the bridge with wind, rain, and now lightening.  Eeeps.

I looked at my watch as I passed the baton and I came in at 48 minutes - 2 min faster than predicted, and at a 10:16 pace. 

Post-run bonus miles
It was very congested and to get my training miles in, I needed to reverse my route and run back to the condo.  And it was raining and lightning out.  Plus there was major congested traffic on the side of the road I had to run on. 

None of that mattered - I just beat my time and had a FANTASTIC run.  I ran fast and had SO MUCH FUN in crazy conditions.  In fact, the crazy conditions are probably what made it so fun.  What can I say, I'm not wired like normal people.... I like crazy stuff.  I ran/skipped/floated my first ~2 miles back in sheer happiness, even as a ran through puddles and had jerks driving on the shoulder I was running on. 

Then a window opened of a car stuck in traffic - it contained runners #4 and 5.  Stuck in traffic.  Not good.  But nothing I could do about it, so I just ran back to the condo.  Did a total of 9.25 miles (warm-up, race leg, and return run).  I was one soggy mess.  But a happy soggy mess.

Rest of Saturday
We hung around the condo for a while, and after ~30 minutes, runners #4 and #5 came back, saying traffic was so bad there was no way they could get over the bridge and to their start.... so DNF for our team :/  But they brought groceries for breakfast, so we made the best of it.  After an hour (ish) things cleared up and they decided to try and make the final leg.  Traffic was gone, so A ran the final leg and crossed the finish line.  So not quite a DNF....

While they were gone, I took a nap (yay!).  Once they came back, we ran around for a bit doing tourist errands (swimsuits and beer), then spend quality time by the pool (it turned gorgeous and sunny!).  4 of the 8 condo-mates went back to Houston in the afternoon, and 2 of the condo-mates had plans with friends.  So that left just A and me up to our own devices.  My coach wanted me to do another 35 mile ride that day, and we did go through the hassle of bringing our bikes with us.  So we headed off on Road 22 south, with the intention of only doing as much as we felt.  The roads were crappy (chip seal and VERY rough) and while traffic was light, those on the roads were jerks.  So, we rode down to where the state park started (11 miles) and turned around.  My wrists were killing me from the rough roads, so I was happy to be headed back home.  We turned north and found wind (boo!).  Nothing major but still annoying.  Did a total of 22 miles and called it good. 

We got cleaned up and tried a very cute bistro I saw near the condo (Black Sheep Bistro), split a bottle of wine, and had a tasty dinner.

All in all, a very good day. :)

Shrimp and Couscous Salad with Lemon Basil Vinaigrette

I like to cook yummy and healthy things.  Something we came up with years ag when I was studying for my engineering exam (think Bar exam, but 4 years after you graduate), was that on Sundays, I'd cook a big batch of "something" that would last 3-4 nights.  Will can't cook well, cooking food every night was just too time comsuming, and with my funky dietary needs, "winging it" really doesn't work well on a regular basis.  Six years later, and this is pretty much how we like to eat.  Its easy and it guarantees that I have food I can eat during the week.  Fortunately, we both like leftovers too, or else this way of cooking would never work.  I try to cook seasonally, but that doesn't always work out.  And I rarely cook anything "American" - we like mostly asian and mediterranean flavors. Most of my recipes come from Cooking Light, with some tweaks.  Nutritional requirements are a 2:1 carb/protein ratio and that the protein is either fish or poultry.  When I cook something I particularly like, I'll post it here to share.

Shrimp and Couscous Salad with Lemon Basil Vinaigrette
I have a ton of basil that I inexplicably bought last week and didn't use, plus since its getting warm, I wanted a bright summery salad to eat for the week.  I took a chicken/basil/couscous salad recipe and tweaked it a bit.  I like this because there's minimila cooking, which is great when things are warm.

Ingredients

14 oz can chicken broth
16 oz medium size shrimp (pre-cooked and frozen.
4 oz whole wheat israeli couscous
8 oz whole wheat normal (small) couscous
(this is about 2 cups of dry couscous - you can use all small couscous, I just like the idea of the 2 kinds mixed together)
water to bring total liquid volume up to 2 1/4 cups
2 cloves garlic, chopped fine
1 cup chopped fresh basil
1/4 cup extravirgin olive oil
3 tablespoons sherry vinegar
3 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
~1 teaspoon grated lemon zest
3/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1 cup sliced green onions
1 red bell pepper (chopped)

 Preparation

Bring broth/water and 1 finely chopped garlic clove to a boil in a medium saucepan. Add add couscous to broth; stir well. Remove from heat, cover and let stand 10 minutes. Place couscous in a large bowl; cool completely. Fluff with a fork.

Prep Vinaigrette by mixing 1 clove of garlic, basil through pepper in a separate bowl and let it stand ~15 or so for flavors to combine (I just let it sit for as long as it took the couscous to cool down in the freezer).

Thaw frozen shrimp in a collander under cool water.

Combine couscous, green onions, red pepper, shrimp, and vinaigrette in large dish.  Cover and refrigerate at least 2 hours or overnight.  (or 15 minutes because you're hungry and can't wait any longer like I did).

Notes
  • This is pretty heavy on the garlic, so you may want to reduce it by one clove.  I like garlic, so this doesn't bother me a bit.
  • The second night, I thought the lemon disappeared a bit, so I whipped up more vinaigrette and mixed it in the remaining salad.
  • I was supposed to add garbanzo beans to this and totally forgot, so this probabaly doesn't have quite as much protein as I needed.  Ooops.
  • This is VERY PRETTY when its fresh and the green onion / basil are green.  As it sits in the fridge, the greens darken a bit but are still tasty.  This would be a good potluck / picnic dish since its pretty quick to prepare and can hang out for several hours without threat of food poisoning.

May Weekend #1 Down

I may have mentioned a few (ok several) times that my coach is trying to kill me this month.  Or at least make sure I'm super-duper prepared for Boise.  This basically equates to more training than ever.  I just hope I can survive.....

Thursday - 45 min spin class + 1 hr yoga in the morning (normal routine).  Added bonus was a 1 hr descend pace run after work.  In the heat.  boo.

Friday - recovery day.  However, I actually worked this day (first Friday in a month I had to work... boo!) and then I volunteered for field day at the elementary school our office adopted.  I mentor a 5th grader, who had the afternoon field day shift, so I wanted to brave the heat and work the afternoon shift so I could see her in action.  Good plan, except her Mean Girls friends accused her of cheating on a state test (she passed, they didn't), so the poor kid was tossed in suspension for the day.  There were tears, it was bad.  Anyways, I ended up supervising the obstacle course, which was signficantly easier than last year's tag duty.  All I had to do was watch them go through hoops, jump rope 10 times, then walk with tin-can stilts for a while.  Not hard, but it was 95 degrees and I was doing a bunch of walking around, so not exactly a true recovery day.

Saturday - morning run then afternoon bike.

I ran 8 miles through the park, started a bit earlier than normal (6:30 AM) so I could beat out the heat.  Fortunately, a cool front blew through and it was actually nice out.  My pace wasn't blazing, but it was in the "acceptable" range for the zone I should have been running in.  Quads felt a bit heavy, but that's not entirely unusual.  Ended up doing the last part of my run going upstream through a group of very new TnT people.  I'm assuming they're training for the Houston marathon, because I can't figure out why else they'd be starting up so early.  And most of them were walking and looked pretty much straight off the couch.  One of them even exclaimed "wow, you've turned around already".  The look on her face was priceless when I told her I was on mile 7 of 8 for the day.  She's in for a shock if she thinks 8 miles is a long way....  After the run, I headed home, tried (and failed) to take a nap, then just ended up catching up on my TiVo.  Headed out on my bike at noon (so I could take a nap that afternoon) and rode 90 minutes (25 miles).  It was windy so my speed wasn't there, but my average cadence was 86, which for me is awesome.  I'm usually in the upper 70's to low 80's, so I was happy.  Especially to have light/quick legs after running in the morning.  My nap plan failed when Will called and said the guys were going to the bar for lunch.  I had only eaten on piece of pb&j toast (plus about 70 ounces of Infinit), so I was starving.  So much for my nap...

Sunday - brick day! (90 min bike + 30 min run).  Coach brought in a photographer for the website, so he wanted a ton of people to join the team brick.  Half of Team Erin came along (A), which was great, because I'm very clearly in the middle of the two ability levels of the group (very fast or very slow), so it was nice to have a buddy.  Since this was my third trip through the same park in 25 hours time, we took a slightly different route (out on Westheimer Parkway instead of staying on the trail to the end).  It was windier, but it was nice to see new stuff.  Cadence was 84, so I was a happy camper.  "A" had things to do, so I ran the 30 min by myself.  Pace was faster than yesterday but my legs still felt heavy.  Photos should be interesting - my tan lines from LoneStar are terrible.  Overall, a pretty good brick, though, and I was happy.  Then off to grab Will and head for breakfast.  And a much needed nap.

This weekend is a bit wonky, as I'm part of a relay team for the Beach to Bay marathon relay in Corpus.  I'm riding 2.25 hrs on Friday (so I don't have to ride on Sunday AND drive back home).  Then Saturday is race day.  I've got my leg (4.5 miles) and then I'm doing an extra leg to get my miles in.  And that afternoon I hope to do another 2.25 hr bike ride somewhere along the coast.  Or the beach may be too hard to resist, since we've rented a house on Padre Island.  Or maybe both, we'll just see.  The following weekend is crazy, with 12 mile runs and 3 hr rides - all on hills. I guess its nice to have something to look forward to, even if its scary.
